Meet Our New Board Members – Katie Thorson

A Board of Directors is an essential (and required) piece of a nonprofit, responsible for guiding the organization toward a sustainable future. YNPN Phoenix’s future is bright as ever as we welcome some of the Valley’s top young talent to our board in 2016. Get to know them and say hi next time you see them at a YNPN Phoenix program!

  1. Name, position, organization
Katie Thorson, Volunteer Manager, New Pathways for Youth

  2. Other professional involvement/accomplishments
YNPN LINK winner 2016, Volunteer Mentor with NPFY to 16 year old young woman since April 2015

  3. How long have you been a YNPN Phoenix member?
    A little over a year

  4. Favorite YNPN event or memory?
Presenting at LINK! I felt so loved and supported because many of my coworkers, friends and family showed up as well.

  5. Where did you grow up?
Minnesota, I go back whenever I can.

  6. What was it about your organization that made you want to be involved?
I love the 1-on-1 connection mentoring makes. Education and knowledge of how to succeed is an awesome start, then we put the cherry on top with making connections. Also, I get to interact with good people all day, that’s always a plus!

  7. Tell us about one of the most valuable things you’ve learned working for your organization, or nonprofit organizations in general.
That nonprofits are not all that different from for-profits. The way we conduct strategy, procedures, “sales” is similar. It’s the fact that their money is not giving them something tangible that makes it different (and a challenge!)

  8. Who or what is a source of inspiration for you?
My mentee, Kyslev, above all others. She has had the biggest impact on my life so far. Sometimes I don’t know who is the mentor and who is the mentee.

  9. Favorite quote?
“Ladies is pimps too” - Jay Z

  10. What do you hope to contribute to YNPN Phoenix?
A really focused approach to zone in on what we can provide to our members. I want YNPN Phoenix to go to the next level and provide for others what it has provided for me, and more.
