Meet Our New Board Members – Marcella Columbus

A Board of Directors is an essential (and required) piece of a nonprofit, responsible for guiding the organization toward a sustainable future. YNPN Phoenix’s future is bright as ever as we welcome some of the Valley’s top young talent to our board in 2016. Get to know them and say hi next time you see them at a YNPN Phoenix program!

  1. Name, position, organization
Marcella Columbus, Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation

  2. Other professional involvement/accomplishments
VP Programs at Sigma Alpha Iota Phoenix Alumnae Chapter, a women’s music fraternity
Communication Award while working at Thousand Pines Outdoor Science School

  3. How long have you been a YNPN Phoenix member?
    Since November 2015

  4. Favorite YNPN event or memory?
I really enjoyed the volunteer info panel at the Desert Botanical Garden this past winter

  5. Favorite place in Phoenix to grab a drink with friends or coworkers?
    Pizza People

  6. Favorite quote?
“900 years of time and space, and I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important” -Doctor Who

  7. What’s one thing you wish the general public knew more about when it comes to your organization/cause?
Regarding Fresh Start, most people assume we only help “battered” women or women in DV situations, but we actually serve all women over the age of 18!

  8. Tell us about a time that reaffirmed why you do the work that you do.
I have worked with a large variety of organizations, with children, adults, etc. But I think what is so great is hearing the positive results that have come from the clients/people we serve. Women come to us at Fresh Start and tell us how much the organization has helped them get to the position they want in life. Similarly, when I taught 5th and 6th graders, I would sometimes receive letters from the students and they would tell me how thankful they were to have had me as their teacher/leader and how I positively impacted their life. Whenever I receive that sort of affirmation I feel like I am on the right track toward helping others.

  9. How do you decompress after a long week?
Watch TV with my roommate or go rock climbing

  10. What do you hope to contribute to YNPN Phoenix?
I want to be a positive influence in YNPN Phoenix. My hope is to help strengthen both the chapter and the bonds within it and use it as a tool to further sustainability and community within the valley.
